The 24-year-old, who in October was cleared of murdering her British roommate Meredith Kercher after a four year legal battle, is expected to be paid well over a million dollars for her story.

A spokesman said she had hired Washington lawyer Robert Barnett to represent her in negotiations with publishers and secure the best deal.

Mr Barnett handled the publishing of former prime minister's memoirs and has represented the literary interests of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Sarah Palin among others.

He is a major power broker in Democratic politics and is often brought in to coach Democrat presidential candidates ahead of debates with Republican opponents.

Knox returned to her hometown of Seattle in October following a dramatic courtroom scene that was covered by media around the world.

Although she has been photographed often she has yet to give any interviews, helping to preserve the value of an eventual book deal.

Earlier this year a film was made about the murder case, with actress Hayden Panettiere playing Knox.
