"STRIKE ACTION TO CONTINUE"-COMRADE OMAR

As the nationwide strike action declared by the organised labour and civil society organisations commenced in Abuja, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar says protesters will continue to occupy the streets of Abuja until the Federal Government rescinds its decision on the removal of fuel subsidy. He says the removal of fuel subsidy is an anti-people policy that will further impoverish the people.

President of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Peter Esele and a former member of the House of Representatives, Dino Melaye criticised the decision of the Federal Government to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry.

Some civil society activists also condemned the Federal Government’s action saying it is a misplaced priority.

Meanwhile commercial activities are at a standstill in the Federal Capital Territory with the strike fully in place in the city.

The Federal Secretariat is empty with workers firmly rooted in their homes in solidarity with the labour unions.

But the streets are not entirely empty. Few cars are on the streets both private and commercial and pedestrians are walking freely from place to place.
