A man in China died after his doctors fled a hospital fire, leaving him on the operating table, hospital officials said Friday.
The man was left unattended for 30 minutes while undergoing surgery to amputate his leg Wednesday night at the Shanghai No. 3 People's Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Hu Yuan. Officials say the man died of apparent smoke inhalation.
A disinfecting machine caught fire in the next room and a nurse was unsuccessful in trying to douse the flames.
The surgeons initially continued on with the surgery, but once the power went out, they left, hospital officials said.
Firefighters prevented the staff from returning to the operating room.
The hospital has taken full responsibility for the death and is said to be working on compensation for the victim's family.
