Woman Blames Ghosts for Killing 2 Daughters With Hatchet

A 33-year old woman accused of using a hatchet to kill her 8-year-old and 4-year-old daughters is blaming ghosts for their death.

Police say Naiyana Patel bludgeoned her two young daughters with a hatchet and then used the ax to repeatedly strike herself in the head. "It's just a terrible, terrible incident that occurred," Lt. Wallace Welch, interim chief of police, told local TV station WYFF.

Welch said the father of Jiya Patel, 7, and Piya Patel, 4, found his daughters dead and wife after returning home from work.

Patel's husband says she was being treated for depression after suffering a miscarriage.

Naiyana recently switched medication because the initial prescription did not seem to help, her husband said.

She remains hospitalized after undergoing surgery.
